Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection in the world — and Singapore is no exception. Most sexually active people will contract HPV at some point in their lives. While many HPV infections clear on their own, certain strains can cause cervical cancer, throat cancer, anal cancer, genital warts, and other serious conditions.
What Is HPV?
HPV is a family of over 200 related viruses. They are grouped into two broad categories:
- Low-risk HPV strains (e.g., HPV 6 and 11) — cause genital warts but are not associated with cancer
- High-risk HPV strains (e.g., HPV 16 and 18) — responsible for approximately 70% of cervical cancer cases
HPV is transmitted through skin-to-skin sexual contact, not just penetrative sex. This means condoms, while helpful, do not fully prevent transmission.
HPV Testing in Singapore
HPV testing in Singapore is primarily recommended for women. It involves a swab of the cervix (similar to a Pap smear) to detect high-risk HPV strains. The Singapore Cancer Society and Ministry of Health recommend:
- Women aged 25–29: Pap smear every 3 years
- Women aged 30–69: HPV test every 5 years (or Pap smear every 3 years)
Men can carry and transmit HPV but there is currently no approved routine HPV test for men in Singapore. High-risk men (such as MSM) may be offered anal HPV screening at some clinics.
HPV Vaccination in Singapore
The HPV vaccine is one of the most effective tools for preventing HPV-related cancers. Singapore currently offers two vaccines:
- Gardasil 9 — protects against 9 HPV strains (6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58). Recommended for both males and females up to age 26, and in some cases up to age 45 after medical consultation.
- Cervarix — protects against HPV 16 and 18
The HPV vaccine is included in the National Childhood Immunisation Schedule for girls in Singapore (Primary 5 and Secondary 1). Adults who missed vaccination as children can still benefit from the vaccine, particularly if they have not yet been exposed to all strains.
Genital Warts Treatment in Singapore
Genital warts caused by HPV 6 and 11 can be treated but not cured (the underlying virus may remain). Treatment options at Wonderhealth include topical creams (podophyllotoxin, imiquimod), cryotherapy, or surgical removal for larger or more persistent warts.
Is HPV Screening Covered by MediShield Life or Medisave?
HPV vaccination may be partially subsidised under the Singapore National Immunisation Registry (NIR) scheme for eligible age groups. Medisave can be used for HPV vaccination at participating clinics. Speak with the Wonderhealth team to understand your coverage options.
