Chlamydia and gonorrhoea are consistently among the most frequently diagnosed sexually transmitted infections in Singapore. What makes them particularly dangerous is that the majority of infected individuals experience no symptoms at all — which is why STD screening is so essential.
Understanding Chlamydia in Singapore
Chlamydia is caused by the bacterium Chlamydia trachomatis and is spread through unprotected vaginal, anal, or oral sex. In Singapore, chlamydia rates have been rising, particularly among young adults aged 15–29.
When symptoms do occur, they may include:
- Unusual discharge from the penis or vagina
- Pain or burning when urinating
- Pain or swelling in the testicles (men)
- Pelvic pain or bleeding between periods (women)
- Rectal pain or discharge (for anal exposure)
However, up to 75% of women and 50% of men with chlamydia have no symptoms at all.
Understanding Gonorrhoea in Singapore
Gonorrhoea is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae and is also transmitted through sexual contact. It can infect the genitals, rectum, and throat. Like chlamydia, it is frequently asymptomatic, particularly in women.
When symptoms appear, they typically include:
- Thick, cloudy, or bloody discharge from the penis or vagina
- Painful urination
- Sore throat (for throat infections)
- Rectal symptoms including discharge or anal itching
Why Untreated Infections Are Dangerous
If left untreated, both chlamydia and gonorrhoea can cause serious complications:
- Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID) in women, which can lead to infertility or ectopic pregnancy
- Epididymitis in men, which can affect fertility
- Increased susceptibility to HIV transmission
- Gonorrhoea can spread to the bloodstream in rare cases, causing a life-threatening systemic infection
Drug-resistant gonorrhoea (sometimes called ‘super-gonorrhoea’) is also an emerging concern in Singapore and globally, making early testing and appropriate treatment critical.
How Are Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea Tested in Singapore?
The most accurate method is the PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test. At Wonderhealth, samples are typically collected via urine or swab (urethral, vaginal, cervical, rectal, or throat, depending on sexual practices). PCR testing is highly sensitive and specific, making it the gold standard for diagnosing both infections.
Treatment for Chlamydia and Gonorrhoea in Singapore
Both infections are treatable with antibiotics. Chlamydia is typically treated with a course of doxycycline or azithromycin. Gonorrhoea is usually treated with an injection of ceftriaxone. It is essential to complete the full course of treatment and to abstain from sexual activity until you and any partners have been treated.
Should My Partner Also Be Tested?
Yes. If you test positive for chlamydia or gonorrhoea, your recent sexual partners should be notified and tested as soon as possible. Wonderhealth can provide guidance on partner notification, which can be done anonymously if preferred.
